Ron E. Pruitt, is a world expert in Barrett’s Esophagus and Pancreaticobiliary disorders. He is the leader of our region in Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Radio Frequency Ablation (Halo) of Barretts Esophagus as well as in treating Pancreaticobiliary disease with Interventional Endoscopy (ERCP). He has performed greater than 10,000 of these complex procedures throughout his career and has the highest current case volume. He is listed by his colleagues as one of Nashville’s most talented and respected physicians in Consumers’ Guide to Top Doctors, a publication of medicine’s best. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree with double majors in Chemistry and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his Doctorate of Medicine from UNC School of Medicine and completed an Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama(UAB) School of Medicine. His Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UAB was completed under the stewardship of his mentor and Nobel nominee, Basil I. Hirschowitz, M.D., the inventor of the flexible fiber optic endoscope. Flexible endoscopy has broadly revolutionized many areas of medicine and is one of the single most important contributions to medicine in the 20th century. Dr. Pruitt is double Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterology Association. He is published widely with numerous scientific and clinical papers on gastrointestinal disease and is the recipient of national awards from the American College of Physicians, the American Lithotripsy Society, and the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Pruitt is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Saint Thomas West Hospital since 1995, and is Chief Medical Officer of the Maria Nathanson Center of Excellence in Gastrointestinal, Pulmonary and Renal Medicine. He is the immediate past 2 term Governor of TN for the American College of Gastroenterology.
One measure of colonoscopy quality is detection of precancerous polyps, with target detection rates of 15% in women and 25% in men. Dr. Pruitt exceeded these thresholds with a rate of 21% in his female patients and in 31% in men.
He has just recently opened a state of the art, State licensed and medically supervised Residential Alcohol and Drug Detox facility, Brentwood Springs Detox to help clients with substance use disorders (Opiod, Methamphetamine, Benzodiazepine and Alcohol) withdraw, reverse and recover in a comfortable, confidential residential setting.
